By far our fastest seller.” It was only one pipe it should do no harm. Does he even know? Bah! He never checks the inventory, all is well. “I assure you my dear friend the last pipe has been sold.”. “Really? That was fast, the last shipment only came in a few weeks ago, did we miscount the Sherry?” Fortunato replied curiously. How far will he persist on this matter? Business is thriving, all is well. One pipe of sherry is nothing to investigate. Hundreds of pipes of Sherry come through this business, what makes this pipe suspicious? “Is there something wrong Fortunato?”, Fortunato sighs “Indeed, something is wrong. I saw man invading the wine the other night…” He saw me?! Impossible, nobody was around. He must have been seeing things. “I assure you my friend facility is safe; no soul could have trespassed our facility” “No! I saw a man last night. He must’ve stolen our Sherry! Was it worth it to steal a pipe of Sherry? This is Fortunato’s business as well, not just mine. I should think of it as such. Does Fortunato put as much into this business as I do? No! he does not, guilt shall not best me. I am the engine to this company, he is a mere accessory for looks. None the less these thoughts will pass; Fortunato hasn’t mentioned the incident in a while. Everything will be fine, I’ll just order another pipe next time we get a shipment of Sherry. “My dear Fortunato, how are you doing on this finest of evening?” “Fine, I’ve just been thinking a lot lately about the business, and you…” replied Fortunato. He’s been thinking about me, what could this mean? “Thinking about me, have I done something to spark your interest lately?” Everything will be fine, he knows nothing, he does not have any evidence to support what I predict he may say. “It was you Montresor, I know of it now. You took the pipe of sherry.” Sighed Fortunato, “Your better than this, and you know it. But how can I forgive you for something like this? I can’t, that is the issue.” “My dear friend I assure you I am not the individual involved in this matter, you must be horribly mistaken.” He has caught me, how? There is no possible way he could’ve known it was me. He must be making arbitrary assumptions. Could he have found tracks? No, nothing was left behind I know if this. “Would you like to know how I figured out your whole scheme? Well,

To ensure this, Montresor teases and taunts Fortunato by offering to Luchesi to taste the wine because “if anyone has a critical turn, it is he (Poe 2).” This challenges Fortunato’s self-worth and insults both Luchesi and Montresor in the process by stating “you have been imposed upon; and as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado (Poe 2).” This goes to show that Fortunato's pride is of such importance that he is too ignorant to notice the effect his digs have on Montresor, someone who is meant to be his friend. His inflated ego is what ends up leading him to fall for Montresor’s trap and this is shown through Fortunato's actions and…
