Indeed, we have come a long way from women not being able to earn the same wage as men to men not being able to gain full custody of their children after a divorce. However, we have created a society where it almost seems impossible for men and women to be treated or considered equal. This is because there will always be the concept of gender roles and that gender identifies what an individual is capable of. In the essay “Learning to Be Gendered,” by Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet, they bring this idea to the surface when they state, “people handle infants more gently when they believe them to be female, more playfully when they believe them to be male” (740). This goes to show that our gender primarily has an influence on the way that we are treated in this world.
