They are also similar in many ways. First, they are both wanting a result out of their hard work. The characters also have the same values; Hard work pays off. Many of the themes are the same also. Both exhibit perseverance and working hard through the emotional and physical struggles. “I jotted frantic notes in the margins of my pad.” (pg. 13) He was taking notes of the teacher's words as she ridiculed another student. He had no time to sympathize for the other student. He realized he had to learn as much as he could. In “One Last Time” Gary Soto’s priorities are much more important. His priorities include working to provide for his family and be able to buy clothes. “I let my fifty-three dollars slip quietly from my hands, buying a pair of pants, two shirts, and a maroon T-shirt, the kind that was in style.”(pg. 409) Latsly both memoirs show perseverance and hard working attitudes.
