Me Talk Pretty One Day Theme

There are many differences between “Me Talk Pretty One Day” and “One Last Time” First, “One Last Time” is very serious and the characters are poor while “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is very upbeat and hopeful. Secondly, “One Last Time” is talking about something much more serious than learning french from a mean teacher. Lastly, “Me Talk Pretty One Day” he finds it imperative to learn french while in “One Last Time” their priorities are more important.
They are also similar in many ways. First, they are both wanting a result out of their hard work. The characters also have the same values; Hard work pays off. Many of the themes are the same also. Both exhibit perseverance and working hard through the emotional and physical struggles. The first way “One Last Time” and “Me Talk Pretty One Day” are similar is that both of the memoir’s characters show that they are hardworking. “I jotted frantic notes in the margins of my pad.” (pg. 13) He was taking notes of the teacher's words as she ridiculed another student. He had no time to sympathize for the other student. He realized he had to learn as much as he could. In “One Last Time” Gary Soto’s priorities are much more important. His priorities include working to provide for his family and be able to buy clothes. “I let my fifty-three dollars slip quietly from my hands, buying a pair of pants, two shirts, and a maroon T-shirt, the kind that was in style.”(pg. 409) Latsly both memoirs show perseverance and hard working attitudes. In “One Last Time” Gary Soto works hard all summer so he can wear new clothes to school. He even goes to a harder job to get more money.
