Comparing Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves To Death

Today, television and cell phones are becoming more of a distraction and a waste of energy and time, rather than the use of entertainment. According to Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited he analyzes the modern society compared to the past proving that technology is becoming a distraction. In Neil Postman’s article “Amusing Ourselves to Death” he expresses the similarities and differences between life in America in the 1980s and Huxley’s novel. Author Neil Postman specifically disputes that technology is taking over us and is making our lives become more meaningless. Some things people do are drugs, reading, learn to do new activities, enjoy being with friends and loved ones, etc. Drugs are a bad habit that need to be broken as soon as possible. Postman states that, “There was a thing called Heaven; but all the same they used to drink enormous quantities of alcohol.There was a thing called the soul and a thing called immortality. But they used to take morphia and cocaine.” This means that people do drugs to convince themselves of things they do not want to believe are true or real. Some others take drugs due to the feeling that they don’t fit in, depression, or peer pressure. There are ways to end addiction but it is not an easy process. Seek professional help from a drug treatment facility and try hard to stay motivated. Most drugs may lead to damaging your mind and body. For your body it can lead to hair loss, cancer, insomnia, loss of appetite, and addiction. For your mind it can also lead to damage to your brain cells, suicidal thoughts, memory loss, hallucinations. You would want to end addiction to be healthy, to have good relationships with family and friends, to have a stable job, and most importantly make yourself
