Hercules (1997 Movie) V.S. Heracles (Myth)

Who put the glad in gladiator? Hercules! This line is at the beginning of the Disney’s 1997 movie Hercules. Disney’s movie tells the story of Hercules as a hero that many should look up to. However, the story of Heracles is quite different. The characters, the 12 labors, the plot and the death of Hercules in the movie Hercules was quite different that the myth Heracles.
The characters in Hercules the movie and Heracles the myth are different in various ways. Hera in the myth is in a way like Hades in the movie but Hades is not in the myth. For example, in both the movie and the myth Hera/Hades try to harm Hercules. In the myth, Hera sends two serpents to Heracles cradle to kill him. In the movie, Hades uses a potion to attempt to make Hercules mortal. In both the movie and the myth, Hades/Hera fail in their attempt. The characters in the movie are more entertaining that the myth.

In the movie when he does the 12 labors he didn’t have any kids or a wife and all of the 12 labors were not shown. In the myth all of the 12 were explained and these were a result of the fact that he killed his wife and their children. In the movie 5 labors were shown/mentioned and others that weren’t any of the 12 labors. The five labors that were shown in the movie were; the slaying of Lernaean Hydra, the slaying of the Nemean Lion, capturing the Erymanthian Boar, the slaying of the Stymphalian Birds. The difference in the movie is that the boar was actually killed and the birds captured. In the myth all twelve of them were presented. The labors in the movie, if presented accurately, may be too much for a movie and they needed to summarize the
