Nepalese people respect family norms ad values, they are more committed to their family. Whereas here in America, the Americans are individual oriented, the individual values gets prominence than the family values. The Americans are more committed and limited to themselves only. When we talk about family norms and values, in Nepali culture, people have to be in disciplined and respect elderly people. It is highly valued traits in Nepali culture. Nepali people don’t call their elders by their names. That’s why I still have problems today calling elderly people or my American professors by their first names. Also, pre-marriage sex is still a ‘Big-Issue’ in Nepal. Nepalese parents make it such a big deal when the truth that their child is in a relation with someone else reveals. In the context of America, pre-marriage sex is not a big deal instead, it is said that the parents fear if their child doesn’t have a girlfriend or a boyfriend. It seems really different to western culture, how two unknown people get married. Yet in Nepal, more than 70% of couples get married without knowing one another closely. While Nepalese parents consider their children’s marriage, they try to look for a bride or groom of same financial level as their son or daughter, and has similar education background and respect in their local community. Where in USA, youngster search their husband or wife by themselves. They don’t give priority to each other’s family background or their status. This uneven background and status I believe, has also been the reason in USA for divorce. We can also see parents divorcing smoothly in family, where their children learns same and do the same. American culture as compared to the Nepalese culture has much freedom. This many of the times is appropriate for the individual development of a child but at times, this freedom might bring about some really in appropriate consequences. The Nepalese culture has many restrictions, from every small thing like greeting a person to what religion is to be followed. Nepalese need to be bound in rules and regulations of the family, society and community. Whereas, in America, no one cares about the society. It is not that important too.
