Two stories. Three people. All on a journey. One on a life journey, the other on a journey to end a life. One a story of heartbreak, the other a story of a rivalry that is given up for a friendship.
In this essay, we will be taking a look at the differences and similarities that can be found in two stories: “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Interlopers” by Saki. We will examine the big and small, the major and minor differences and similarities between these two short stories, and some thoughts and feeling that these characters may have had during their story. However, before we can do that, we must first introduce the stories, their characters, and what the stories are about.

What isn’t quite so self-evident is the conflict Louise has with herself in “The Story of an Hour”, where it reads how she "was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will—as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been.” Louise knows that she should feel pain and sadness at the loss of her husband, but she can't help but feel somewhat happy and free because he is gone, like I talked about in the first …show more content…
Ulrich and Georg had set out to kill one another, but instead they are both killed by wolves. It was used in “The Story of an Hour” to show how Mrs. Mallard is happy rather than sad for her husband’s death. Both stories also used foreshadowing. In “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs Mallard hears the news of her husband’s death and seems more joyful than devastated, welcoming life more freely. But when it is revealed that her husband is actually alive and well, Mrs. Mallard has that joy taken and she dies. The hint that this would happen is in the first paragraph where there is mention of Louise Mallard having “heart troubles.” This should be taken as more meaningful than just the idea that she is unhealthy. It reinforces the troubles that she has been having with her heart in marriage.
In “The Interlopers”, the two men that were hunting each other became trapped underneath a tree branch and were hunted by wolves in the end. And the clue that THIS would happen is in the beginning of the story, when the narrator says that the men were acting more like wolves rather than humans, out hunting their enemies at

Kate Chopin’s short story “The Story of an Hour” has a sad beginning, an understandable middle, but an odd ending. I was upset for Mrs. Mallard in the beginning when she learned of her husband’s death. At first, I just assumed that when Mrs. Mallard “wept at once,” she was just acting like a normal distraught wife. She had heard that her husband had died, and I thought her being upset was acceptable. I did not think anything about it until you get further along in the story.…

“Effort it is,- to dress and entertain.” Louise reacts differently but overall similar in reason to the affects of her husband's ‘death’, “dull stare in her eyes”, shows her lack of meaning now that her role of wife is terminated. The two stories try to convince us that personal ambitions are shied upon over the favour of their constricting roles. Originally Louise fights feelings of happiness knowing it to be wrong and monstrous to consider, like how the wife in the Yellow Wallpaper refused to help herself in favour of satisfying her husband. “Recognize this thing- beat it back” (SH).…

The story stated, "When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills." (Chopin). This quote substantiates the fact that Mrs. Mallard died. This stands in contrast to the fact that no one died in The Interlopers. We also find situational irony in the denouement of The Story of an Hour.…

One’s Marriage, The Eye and Faith When texting someone, emojis are straightforward, with a laughing emoji symbolizing laughter and clocks representing a clock. On a heart rate monitor, a flashing heart would symbolize the human heart beating in real time. In short stories however, symbols are more ambiguous. The symbols need more time to be identified and explained to those who do not see them.…

The play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin both focus on their women protagonists and the desire for freedom both women have from a male dominating society. Essentially, both authors depict the longing for freedom between these women through the use of characterization, symbolism, and situational irony. In “Trifles” Mrs. Wright had murdered her husband in order to gain her freedom from the restraints that were put on her due to her marriage. Prior to being Mrs. Minnie Wright she was Ms. Minnie Foster.…

In “The Story of an Hour “Louise Mallard is married to her husband Brent Mallard and Louise acts in a surprising manner of Joy once their friend Richards finds out and tells her that her husband Brent has died in a horrible accident. Mrs. Mallard has come alive after finding out the tragic news of her husband dying. The narrator of the story describes her, physically, as "young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength" (67). When the narrator describes the "lines" of Mrs. Mallard's face gives the impression of her holding her true feelings inside and that she's full of "repression. " I am not sure exactly what she is hiding but I have ideas of what it could be.…
