Goleman And Belbin Similarities

In this essay I will be comparing the differences and similarities of the theories of Goleman and Belbin. In four paragraphs I will include an introduction, some similarities and differences and a final conclusion. The theory of Goleman was presented by Daniel Goleman in 1995. It is the theory of emotional intelligence, also referred to as EQ, which is described as the capability to “to identify, assess, and control one’s own emotions, the emotions of others, and that of groups.” (Learning Theories, Emotional Intelligence (Goleman)). The Belbin theory, originated by Meredith Belbin is about the performance strengths and challenges of individuals in a group, and which team roles they are naturally assigned due to these (Team Role Theory, Belbin …show more content…
The basis of this study lies in the single individual. On the other hand, Belbin’s theory has investigated how each of these individuals would work collectively and the roles they would fall into. This theory is based on several people, a group of individuals, who have to cooperate together in order to reach success. The theories have different targets, but the same goal. Belbin’s encouraging of teamwork, leaning on your own abilities while sharing them with others could be important to practice and learn for young adults still in school, but on their way to a whole life of working with individuals, each having their own opinions and values. Goleman’s individualistic keys to success could be useful to learn at any age, but is probably easier understood at an older age. Still, for children to learn to empathize and to even understand what emotions are, and what they mean, these skills are important and should be practiced from a young age. when using learned social skills in relationships by empathizing, recognizing and understanding other people’s emotions and actions (Learning Theories, Emotional Intelligence (Goleman)). So naturally, you will evolve in these social skills just by following your gut in most situations, and by doing so, reaching new levels of understanding of yourself and others. Your emotional intelligence is more like a life long project that will only get better and stronger as time passes and you gain the experience. Although your role in teams is more unpredictable and not something you can work on as directly as with your EQ. For each old team you leave and new team you enter, your roles will probably vary considering the unique mixture of individuals formed everytime.

In conclusion, I will state that the road to success presented by the two theories are similar in a way that they are applicable in many stages of life. The key to success goes from around the time you start wearing a school bag, and it follows you through your entire journey of building a career to starting a family. It is with the help of your EQ that you interact with people. By interacting with people using your EQ you are making contacts and bonds - the start of every successful relationship and
