Although faced with hate, Hester manages to rise above it and help others. The novel classifies as a feminist novel because it shows a woman, alone in a world filled with discrimination, battle against society’s judgement and not giving into peer pressure. In Mark Van Doren’s essay he argues that Hester Prynne is not the victim of her puritan town, but the hero of the story. He emphasizes her heroic attributes and compares her to heroes of previous novels. Van Doren’s use of allusion, reverent tone, and hyperbole create a feeling of praise and puts emphasis on Hester’s heroic properties. Van Doren uses allusion to compare Hester to the heroes of the author Homer. Van Doren states that “[Hawthorne] is the Homer of that New England, as Hester is its most heroic creature.”…

“Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled, to perceive how her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was enveloped. It may be true that, to a sensitive observer, there was something exquisitely painful in it” (Hawthorne). In The Scarlet Letter, a main theme that can be taken from Hester Prynne’s situation is that of self-identity. Hester was meant to suffer under the eyes of the public.…

Hester Prynne is unlike any other woman back in the 1650 's. She had to shamefully wear a scarlet "A" on her chest, that she sewed herself. Back in the day women were supposed to only take orders from the men of the house. Women were to cook, clean, and take care of their husbands. In the village where Hester lived she had done quite the opposite. Hester Prynne committed one of the worst crimes possible back in those days.…

The Scarlet Letter is directly inspired by Hutchinson. The similarities are present between the two but the differences are also broad. Started From the Bottom Now We Here: The Story of Hester Prynne After reading Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The Scarlet Letter,” I have come to the conclusion that Hester Prynne had the most positive moral development of the characters in the book. In the Scarlet Letter, a Hester Prynne is sent overseas to the new colonies by her husband. However, she traveled there alone, which led to her adultery sentence, which is why she is required by law to wear the scarlet letter A for the rest of her life. Hester started out the novel as an adulteress who was shunned by the entirety of the Puritan Society, and by the end of the story had transformed into a symbol of strength for the women of the society.…

Imagine a woman that is always quiet and does her work alone. She keeps to herself and does not talk to many people, but when faced with a problem, she is given the opportunity to speak out for what she believes in. That woman is Hester Prynne, in the novel The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynne has come over much controversy, the largest point being how she is conveyed and seen as a character. Although many literary critics argue Hester’s character is unable to agree that her deed was wrong and threatened the destruction of society, she can be best be described as a dynamic heroine because of the changes she undergoes, her array of emotions, and the way Hawthorne presents Hester as a protagonist throughout the novel.…

Hester: “Able” to Wear The Scarlet Letter As Helen Keller once said “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” This undoubtedly played out in the character of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
