Difference, Power And Discrimination

The Political Science 110 course at Oregon State University had an interesting ability of showing difference, power, and discrimination. The class was politically based, but did not fail to show discrepancies created by the United States of America's government, past and present. This course taught me in 10 weeks more about discrimination, power, and difference then any pass courses I have participated in. This course showed me ways to consider difference, power, and discrimination and how to see it. What is discrimination? Any person may believe that discrimination can just be a thought of mind; meaning, people could just create discrimination in their mind from being too “sensitive”. However, to me, discrimination can come from a mixture …show more content…
The Federal Housing Administration had created a code for selling houses. The code was very racist, as it was mostly targeted to showing where the black or “ghetto” neighborhoods were. The color green was good, the color blue was O.K., the color yellow pretty much meant be careful, and the color red meant the house was ghetto and you should not buy a house here unless you were colored. A normal, white couple could have been looking at a house in the red zone and fall in love with the house, but then find out it is in the red zone and they completely change their minds. Also, a couple of color, who may happen to have money, could be looking for houses and come across one in the blue section that they are wanting to purchase. However, the seller will not sell to the colored couple all because the Federal Housing Administration said blue areas were not for colored people. The main focus is, someone gave a person power, who had an opinion and it automatically created discrimination. How can someone be the judge as to what makes an area “ghetto”? An opinion coming from a person with power can be very dangerous. It can change lives of people quickly. In my opinion, forms of discrimination will never be able to be completely demolished. Unfortunately, the conflict of power and opinions of differences will always be apart

While reading this week’s assignment, Racial Preferences for Whites: The Houses that Racism Built by Larry Adelman, I felt like I understood the idea that he was trying to convey, but at the same time, I felt that he was talking about just a small section of people. I came into reading this piece with my own biases, as does anyone. I am white, I am in the lower middle class, I am suburban, I am not close to by extended family. All of these external factors went into how I comprehended and interpreted the ideas being presented. This piece was focused on the idea that Whites have had an advantage in the housing market in the past, thus creating more opportunities for the future generations.…

This was due to the uncertainty of the job market and scarcity of housing in Detroit. Real estate agents targeted this fear and anxiety, they harvested an enormous amount of money from it. Abhorrent landowners in the inner city of Detroit, raised rents for blacks because housing was scarce, and took the profit. “The rundown appearance of inner city housing and the streets crowded with children and families seemed confirmation of whites’ worst fears of social order” and they made sure to steer clear at any cost (Sugrue 216, 2005). As wealthy whites fled their previous neighborhoods to more expensive homes outside of the city to stay away from the “blight”, these new houses became more expensive.…

This article helps the reader comprehend multiple types of discrimination. It assimilates structural discrimination as well as gender and race. “An ideology must be constantly created and verified in social life; if it is not, it dies, even though it may seem to be safely embodied in a form that can be handed down” (Fields 112). The ideology in the article implies that people are excessively subdued when they are deemed as inferior to a superior race. The article expresses how race is created and re-created in today’s era not only by those included in that said race, but by those who invoke a self-propelling attitude.…

Unfortunately, in the United States the color of an individual’s skin will have an effect on the way a person is treated. Agustin Fuentes in his essay “The Myth of Race” discusses how the social idea of race impacts the way some races are treated. Fuentes mentions statistics about discrimination due to race and that “In test of housing markets conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), black and Hispanic potential renters and buyers are discriminated against (relative to whites) nearly 25 percent of the time” (Fuentes 529). The race, or skin color, that renters prefers is showed to be white as blacks and Hispanics are more likely to be judged. The result of this discrimination tends to segregate neighborhoods between the good white communities and the black or Hispanic dangerous communities.…

However, “Blacks and Latinos also have less access to the entire housing market because whites, through a variety of exclusionary practices by white realtors and home-owners have been successful in effectively limiting their entrance into many neighborhoods” (Silva, Chapter 1, p. 2). Residential segregation is no longer because of overt discrimination but rather “behind-the-scenes” and “invisible racism” with practices such as “steering minorities and Whites into certain neighborhoods, quoting higher rents or prices to minority applicants, or not advertising units at all or showing all available units.” These practices are examples of institutional racism resulting from racist history and discriminatory practices that led many African Americans to not have a choice in where they live and being “clumped” together. It also shows how even though racism is still around, whites are oblivious because of the subtlety and choose to believe the segregation is not racial because “it’s better now than in our past” and is because of the “individual’s…
