Abstract
Gender roles have changed significantly over generations. Women have been in charge of child care responsibilities throughout history. However, in today’s society, men and women can both tend to child care responsibilities and work outside of the household.
The Difference in Gender Roles
Do you ever wonder why there is a difference in gender roles? I have wondered why in past generations, women felt the need to only tend to child- care responsibilities. Also, why men were supposed to be the only one to provide for their family. Over generations, however, the difference in gender roles have changed tremendously.
Women in the 1800’s
In the 1800’s, men mostly dominated women. Women in the 1800’s were supposed to stay home and take care of the household chores and the children. Women were also in charge of teaching, sewing, and planting the family garden. Depending on what class women belonged to, determined what type of work they did. The lower-class women normally tended to the animals, washed clothes for the richer people, and sewed. The upper-class women were normally educated, which meant they would mostly be teachers, clerks, and accountants.

Now that times have changed, women are more independent. Women are able to work outside of the household. However, men still feel like they should be the one working outside the household and providing for the family. Also, they feel like the women should still take care of the house and family. I think that it is hard to encourage men to child care responsibilities because, for so many generations, the women were to tend the children. In my opinion, I am glad that gender roles have changed. However, I still feel like society does not treat men and women equally. Equality has gotten better over the past few generations; However, we still have a long way to
