Many times we are afraid of the outcome and we start to do strange activity to help us feel we have the power to change the outcome when we are not in control of a situation, in order to make feel secure and protected. We start to have a stronger connection with superstition. In the short story “knock on wood” the author mentions how she grew to believe in superstition and how her family had a stronger connection with superstition. She didn’t believe in superstition in her early adulthood, however, things began to change when she became a mother. The story begins with the mother who is getting ready to go the hospital for her son 's jaw surgery. She uses a quantity of time to dress up and wear things that would bring good luck for her son 's surgery, she said “I ‘m too sophisticated to think a color can bring good luck ; I told myself, but just in case, I’m wearing red.” As the story goes on the story takes a flashback when she didn 't believe in superstition and how she questions her family belief. However ever since she became a mother she would do things that she didn’t believe in, she feels the world is a dangerous place and would do things to avoid bad incidents. For example when she was taking her infant to the plane she walked onto that plane with right foot first just for the safety. As the story continue the mother arrives at the hospital and waited in waiting area she was very choosy to where to seat and when she sat down she saw other women rubbing the stone with her thumb. The women stops rubbing the stone when the doctor told her, her husband is in the recovery room as the women was leaving she said “your son is in my prayer” that when the mother realize something about superstition, it has a become a way for her to pray for her son 's well-being and to comfort herself while waiting for her son surgery to be
