Improved Essays
Rounders and basketball are very different sports but there are aspects of it that are very similar and others which are the opposite. The responsibilities and roles of the officials in rounders and basketball are similar, however, in basketball, there are four officials whereas rounders only have two. In basketball, all the officials have different roles. The referees move around the pitch having one side to look at each, this way the game is covered. They also watch for fouls. The timekeeper's job is to time how long each quarter lasts and how long a player is in time out for. The role of the shot clock operator is to time all the timing rules. The scorer keeps a total of field goals, free throws, points, personal fouls, and technical fouls …show more content…
In basketball as well as having a scorekeeper and two umpires they also have a timekeeper and a shot clock operator. In rounders, there is a set number of balls per inning, 20. which all have to be good balls and the no-balls will not count. And two innings per game, this is decided before the game has started. Also if all the players are out the game will end. Basketball doesn't have a set amount of time as they can run over, due to penalties which will add time to the ending. In basketball there is not a set amount of baskets they can achieve, however, they do have set times per inning and how long a game lasts for. Even though they have set times how long a game ends there is a lot that they have to time during a game, for example, the 24-second rule, the 8-second rule, the 5-second rule and the 3-second rule. For the timings to work a times keeper keeps track on how long each quarter lasts and how long a player is out for. In basketball, they also have a shot clock operator which controls all the timing rules. This is different to rounders because in rounders only one person is running at a time and you don’t need to time how long they are out there because they can take as long as they want as long as they don’t get stumped out. There is a lot more to control in basketball so you require more than one official to keep track. In rounders, everything is decided before the game whereas basketball is a fast-paced …show more content…
In basketball, both teams will wear distinctive colours that you can tell the difference between. Where as in rounders both teams could wear the exact same colour kit or the same kit. In basketball both teams are on the pitch are on the pitch at the same time so in order to recognize who's on what team they wear different colour kits to stop confusion as basketball is a fast pace sport with a lot going on at once. Not only that but also they wear a number on the back of the shirt to distinguish between team members, this helps officials because they can tall each players fouls. On the other hand in rounders, as both teams are not on the pitch at the same time they do not have to worry about the colours. Also, they do not require to have a number in their kit because the umpire will have a list of the line up so when they are giving marks for whose out it's easier. The similarities between the two sports to do with the kit they wear are they both require suitable footwear and all members who have long enough hair should tie it back, and all jewellery should be removed. Both rounders and basketball officials wear different things. In basketball the umpires are on the pitch so they have to wear something that contrasts between the players, this would eliminate any confusion between players. Where as in rounders they can wear anything they want as they are not on the

When basketball first started, the use of peach baskets would cause a stoppage of the game every time someone scored because the ball would be stuck in the basket (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This slowed down the pace of the game. At first, someone with a ladder had to fetch the ball from the basket until eventually the bottoms were removed from the baskets. In 1893, after several attempts to alter or replace the basket, cast iron rims replaced these baskets (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This was a major milestone for basketball since the free falling ball after a made basket dramatically increased tempo and scoring of the game.…

The best ways to distinguish the sports are by action, the live play, and the amount of skills needed to succeed in the sport.
