Realistic conflict is when two or more people or groups compete for limited resources. Realistic conflict is based on disagreements over the means to an end over the outcome themselves. The interaction focuses on the individual’s issues that they must address to resolve their conflicts. There are different types of resolution techniques for realistic conflicts, such as negotiation, voting, persuasion, or force (pp. 8). On the contrary, nonrealistic conflicts are created by hostility in which the intended outcome is to hurt or defeat the other individual that is involved in the conflict. Each party determines gains and losses of a particular outcome. Also, individuals perceive their satisfaction they feel with a particular issue, as well as the distributive and procedural justice. In a nonrealistic conflict, it is important to analyze and manage the dispute so that it does not continue to be a deconstructive conflict. It would be beneficial for a person or group in a deconstructive conflict not to use a competing or avoiding attitude towards the conflict. Management of the conflict is essential, and it is vital that each party involved maintains a balance among all forces, such as the gains and losses. In a destructive conflict, it would be beneficial for the parties to attempt to be more flexible and hear the interests of the other party involved. As long as both sides feel that the outcome is fair and benefits the both of them, then the situation can turn from a nonrealistic conflict to a realistic one. Negotiation is beneficial to all members involved in a deconstructive conflict. Nonrealistic conflicts tend to have win-lose situations, but if the conflict can become realistic, there is the possibility for a win-win solution. A win-win outcome can arise after negotiation and compromise between parties. In the long-run nonrealistic conflicts have the chance of hurting both sides involved, which is because nonrealistic conflicts can burn bridges with people that were involved or even people who were not participating in the conflict. For these reasons, an appropriate response to a nonrealistic conflict would be to foster realistic conflict techniques, such as voting, negotiation, and persuasion. These techniques will help to resolve the dispute instead or using nonrealistic techniques, such as aggression. It is common for a person to feel animosity towards another party if they are attempting to defeat them. However, it is in the best interest of both sides to have a realistic and constructive confrontation. An individual may mistakenly perceive another party is defeating them, but with confrontation and communication the misunderstanding can be resolved, and both sides may benefit.
