Money plays a huge role in things like this. As I have already touched on government corruption, I’ll move to higher infant mortality. This is a chronic issue that many pregnant slaves face because they are not provided with enough food. These women can have children who are born underweight, thus leading to death. This can spur the traffickers to bring in more women to have more children to contribute to the overall labor in the long run. This can be contributed to things like low food production as well. If there is not enough food to feed the slaves, due to environmental reasons, they will be given less than those who can pay for the food. Conflict and social interest can lead to the slave trade as well. If we’re talking about war, those who are refugees might be intercepted and forced into slavery because they no longer have a country. Social interest can come down to situations like we see in many third world countries. For instance, we have iPhones and we love our technology. This has forced many people in other country to get forced into a type of “work” that is usually a nightmare. They work long hours for very little pay, if they get any at all. We see sweat shops popping up around the world so that companies like Nike can make products with very little labor costs. We don’t know if these people are getting …show more content…
Many women and children are forced into sexual slavery. Sometimes women are kidnapped and forced to become slaves. Fichtelberg tells us, “It is common practice in parts of Asia for poor women to be abducted or sold to individuals by friends and kept prisoner in brothels for money. Many children who are trafficked are sold to pimps who use them to make money from eager pedophiles.” (239). There is a high demand for sex throughout the world. We can see an example of this in places like South Korea. There are a lot of places where women are forced to buy their freedom back. These places are often referred to as juicy bars by military personnel. Although these establishments are blacklisted, many military members find their way to these places. What happens there is pretty easy to guess. We can even see the exploitation of children in places like Japan. Their culture just recently banned the possession of child pornography in 2014. In 1999 they made the production and sale of this content illegal. Up until that point, people could have it and it was not real issue in their culture. Even after banning it, it is still legal to depict minors and sexual acts in Manga. This is partly due to the massive amounts of money that Japan makes through the Manga industry. The country didn’t actually want to ban it, but they were under a lot of international pressure. This is an example of how the
