1) Explain how professional and legal obligations differ.
Teachers have professional and legal obligations—both are necessary for ensuring the well-being of their students, but each entails different responsibilities. For example, legal obligations are those that are required by law. One of the legal requirements that teachers are bound by is due diligence. As a teacher, it’s important that I protect the safety and security of students. For instance, it’s critical that I pay close and reasonable attention to them while under my supervision—this includes being attentive to students’ physical and emotional safety. He believes that frame of reference or the ability to understand someone else’s point of view is a critical component of effective communication. In order to help students, we need to see things from their perspective. Empathetic listening is one of the techniques that he uses. It’s necessary to listen to students in an empathetic manner—seeking to understand their emotions. However, it’s also essential to decipher what is and isn’t urgent, and what is and isn’t important; urgent matters always take precedence. William Glasser, developer of the choice theory, also identified seven connecting habits that facilitate positive connections and effective communication with students. These habits include caring, listening, supporting, contributing, encouraging, trusting and befriending. Likewise, Glasser identified seven deadly habits that impede on effective communication, which include criticizing, blaming, complaining, nagging, threatening, punishing, and even rewarding students to control them. Nonverbal communication is another important practice of communicating. In fact, Fred Jones believes that body language is more effective than many verbal methods of communicating.
