There are several differences between parole and probation. Parole is a supervised release of an offender from prison; whereas, probation is a type of criminal sentence imposed on an offender in lieu of incarceration (Bureau of Justice Statistics, n.d.). Parole is granted at the discretion of a parole board; whereas, probation is imposed by a judge (American Probation & Parole Association, 2009). Law violations occur when the offender commits another crime (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). A technical violation occurs when the offender forms a pattern of infractions that break the conditions of the probation or parole (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). The offender’s failure to adhere to any of the conditions or terms of the probation or parole will result in the probation or parole being revoked (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012).
