Organic vs. Inorganic food on the Economy
According to an article released by Bigoven, organic foods are commonly more expensive to buy than conventionally farmed produce. Due to the increased costs associated with organic farming practices, there are increased purchase prices, making the final products more expensive than conventionally farmed produce.
Inorganic foods can therefore be seen as the cheaper option when compared to organic foods, thus resulting in an increased demand for crop harvest. This in turn would result in decreased growing costs per unit due to efficient conventional farming methods. They stated that organic produce generally cost between 20%-100% more expensive than inorganic produce. The majority of people in society are unable to afford these high costs, and therefore are willing to buy inorganic foods even though they believe that organic foods to be the healthier option. Farmers who use inorganic farming practices use synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals meaning that the process is less time consuming, thus resulting in lower production costs. Organic farmers use natural, healthy plant compost and animal manure as fertilizers, which is much more expensive to transport. It is also mandatory to ensure that these organic products are certified as organic.
