After many years of fighting over the spread of slaves with the Missouri compromise. This situation emerged again. After the united state won the Mexican war they gained more land so now the question was whether it should let slaves in and be a slave state or be free.Because of their involvement in the Mexican war the south now wanted slave laws. In 1850many congress leaders like Henry clay, john c. Calhoun, DanielWebster, William H. Seward, Stephen A. Douglas, and Jefferson Davis came up with a compromise. Some of the most important bills that made the compromise were. The first bill was that California would be a free state. The 2nd that the new territory gained from Mexico, like New Mexico and Utah had permission to decide whether they wanted to become a slave state or not as long as the votes were fair. the 3rd bill was To make Texas give up clamming new Mexico instead they would be given ten million dollars to pay off the money they owe Mexico. The 4th billwas to abolish the slave trade in the capitol of the country. The 5th bill was to make the fugitive slave act stronger.Even though the compromise did solve some of the issues regarding slaver and territories that south and the north had but it didn’t solve all of the problems. In 1854 senator dougless proposed that he wanted for Nebraska to decide if they wanted to become a slave territory and make a railroad from all the way from Illinois through Nebraska. Douglass idea was to divide the territory into two so he could gain the south support. So he decides the citizens who have the most power should decide whether they wanted their territories to become aslavestate or not. This brought extreme criticism from the Whigs party and the northern democrat, who wanted to keep the Missouri compromise line. Aftermonths of debating it was made into a law. The act separated Nebraska and Kansas. This act was to reverse the Missouri compromise of 1820 which banned slavery to enter the north latitude of 36-30. After the act was passed, people who supported slavery and those who were against slavery moved to Kansas to influence of the result of the first election. But those who favored slaver ended up being charged of fraud. As more people came in to Kansas the violence got worsen. In 1856 anabolitionist name john brown who wanted to end slavery. He started by kidnapping five proslavery advocates and freed they slaves and killed the slave owners. But he got captured and got killed. As the fight continued between both sides two hundred more settlers were killed and earned the name bleeding Kansas.
