Between 1800 and 1860, the life of the northerners and the southerners differed drastically. The extreme differences lead to such severe tensions that caused the two regions of America to loath one another’s presence. Due to theses tensions ¬¬the north and the south made decisions that satisfied their lives concerning the process of the economic, and political systems. Eventually, as the decisions were being made the closer the nation was leading to the Civil War.
The North and the South regions were significantly diverse from one another. The northern economy, as showed in document 1a, was dependent on manufacturing. In document 1a, the value of manufacturing was greater in the northern states for example; New York’s manufacturing value was $378.9 million in 1860. However, the southern states such as Florida’s value was as low as $2.4 million. The southerner economy, however, was dependent on agricultural crops such as cotton. The manifest destiny was a belief that the U.S.’s destiny was to expand to the west; toward the Pacific Ocean and into the Mexican territory. Slavery became an essential issue between the north and the south civilians. The southern states support the expansion of slavery to the west because the slave owners asserted that slavery was essential to progress of civilization (Document 3). In addition, the south claimed, “slavery freed the upper class from the need to do manual labor, to worry about economic day-to-day realities, …gave them the time…to devote themselves to the arts and literature and mechanical advantages…” (Document 3) and expanding slavery toward west strengthened the “Slave Power” in front of the free states (Document 4).
