According a source, our body has CD4 cells also known as “T-cells” or “helper cells.” CD4 cells are white blood cells, which protects our body from getting an infection. Once HIV virus infects the immune system it then begins to destroy the CD4 cells. A healthy person has a range of 500 mm cells to 1200 mm cells. When CD4 cells dropped to certain level such as 200 mm cells the HIV patient is then considered to have stage 3, which is AIDS. HIV is transmitted from one person to another through the exchange of bodily fluids. This includes having unprotected sex such as oral, anal, vaginal sharing needles, blood transfusions and from mother to child meaning a mother who has HIV can give the baby HIV through breastfeeding. If a person has HIV they sometimes may develop symptoms or sometimes they may not develop any. They may develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, mouth sores, yeast infections, night sweats, rashes, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, and diarrhea. However, people that developed AIDS have a higher risk of more infections because of having a damaged immune system. These common symptoms may include chills, fever, and rash, sweats, and weakness, weight loss. You can only develop AIDS if you were contracted with the HIV virus first. According to Wanda Lopez, in 1995 approximately 50, 489 people died of AIDS because of the lack of technology, research, and treatments. In comparison to 1996 to now the number has declined and has been stable for sometime. The drug that is used to treat HIV patients is called antiretroviral and HAART. Unfortunately, these drugs are not a cure for the virus but if taken correctly, everyday, for the same time you can have a better chance to living longer years. According to the line graph below in figure 1, it shows that after using HAART, there has been an increase in people being able to live longer with this drug. However, according to CDC, African Americans are the ones that suffered the most burden of having HIV because they represent 41% of people living with HIV, in comparison to other races.
If you have been diagnosed with HIV early, you have a better chance of living for ten plus years or more depending on if you received the correct treatment and you take good care of your body. However, you can still give someone HIV because there is no cure, so it maybe a chronic disease but with today’s break through, it can be a manageable
