There are three types of communication flow. Downward communication flows from a supervisor to employee or from top to bottom of an organization chart. Upward communication is “a type of communication that is generally a response to requests from supervisors”( Lehman and DuFrene, 2016). And horizontal communication is communication between those on the same level of the organization chart. A message can be affected by the flow of communication. For example, during downward communication employees will learn how to perform certain tasks and about the company they work for.

But one’s cultural norms can be wrong and cause problems between cultures. A stereotype can occur when one will perceive an individual’s behavior as a group that has formed a specific characteristic. Stereotypes can affect communication by not viewing someone as an individual. The interpretation of time can affect communication. Some cultures treat time as an inexhaustible resource. Where as in some other cultures, such as American culture, worry about wasting time. Another barrier is personal space requirement. Personal space is important within cultural communication. For example, some cultures intimate conversations occur within a foot of each other, where as in other cultures the space can be further. Body language can be another barrier of communication. Certain gestures might be acceptable in come cultures but also be offensive to others. Translation limitations can also be a barrier. Certain words can mean different things within different cultures.
