The soup kitchen has the mission of “providing a mutual ministry between the people of the Raleigh area – those who have and those who have not – by providing food obtained by donation and served by volunteers. In this manner, the true spirit of communion, that of sharing God’s gifts with God’s people, can be carried out in a caring and non-judgmental atmosphere”. Reading Toxic Charity has changed my philosophy on deciding where to volunteer. I have begun to analyze non-profits and determine whether they are focusing on betterment or development. It has changed the impact that I long to make beyond the Community Scholars Program. I have altered the model of the non-profit organization that I hope to construct. Instead of providing immediate health services to marginalized populations, I now hope to promote the development of public health leaders. After reading Toxic Charity, I am more aware of the importance of community development. I hope that the training involved with the AmeriCorps program will further expand my community development
