The difference between betterment and development stems from the concept that, “Betterment gives a man a fish, development teaches a man how to fish.” This phrase supports that development offers immediate relief, whereas development offers solutions to the cause of the societal issue. Lupton explains that, development requires the building of relationships and critical thinking due to the complexity of a vast amount of societal issues. Due to the critical thinking involved in development, as well as the complexity of a clear majority of societal problems, development takes longer and results in long-term solutions. Reading Toxic Charity has changed my philosophy on deciding where to volunteer. I have begun to analyze non-profits and determine whether they are focusing on betterment or development. It has changed the impact that I long to make beyond the Community Scholars Program. I have altered the model of the non-profit organization that I hope to construct. Instead of providing immediate health services to marginalized populations, I now hope to promote the development of public health leaders. After reading Toxic Charity, I am more aware of the importance of community development. I hope that the training involved with the AmeriCorps program will further expand my community development
