It was 1944 in Western Poland, it was 3:53 a.m in the Erwachsene sector in Auschwitz. Obergefreiter (Senior Corporal) Dietrich Merz was on a coffee break. It was the middle of winter. It was a record low temperature that night. -47˚F was the annual high that winter. It was miserable outside. Guards and prisoners were suffering just as the rest of the population in the area. It was a winter that would be remembered for years to come.

Dietrich was running down one of the side streets, trying to find the rest of his squad. He turned a corner. Three prisoners jumped out at him. “You bastards kept us locked up for years, it’s your turn.” “Get him!” Dietrich had no idea how to respond. “Get away, an... and I won’t hurt you.” He said, almost sounding like he was going to cry. “Looks like we got a rookie here, you guys up for some fun?” Dietrich was just about to say something when he noticed their armbands. Bright red. They were from the murders ward. They liked this kind of stuff.
One of them slowly advanced. “Stay back.” Dietrich said almost silently. “You say something, or you just trying to annoy me?!” The man said briskly. He came even closer. He then pulled what looked to be a knife out of his pocket. “Any last words?” The man said. Dietrich suddenly realized it was them, or him. “I said, STAY BACK!” Dietrich shouted as loudly as he could. Dietrich then quickly took aim with his Kar98.
