The history of diet soda is longer than you could think. The term of soft drink is developed from soda water around 1798. Carbonated water was invented by Joseph Priestly in 1767, when he first explored a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide by hanging a bowl of water from above a vat of fermenting beer in a brewery in Leeds, England. In 1771, Torbern Bergman, chemistry professor, invented another similar process, separately from Priestly. At this time, many people were suffering from poor health so he was trying to reproduce naturally fizzing mineral spring waters to cure diseases. Now, people made carbonated water by passing pressurized carbon dioxide through water using a carbonator.
