• If you 're one of those individuals who feel guilty when reaching for regular soda instead of its "healthier" counterpart: diet soda, we’re here to ease our mind. And if you 're one of those who take pride on choosing diet soda every time, we are here to burst your bubble. Diet soda has become a favored drink for many because of its advertised superiority to other sodas, but scientific research has linked diet soda and its ingredients to weight gain and even health issues. The problem is so evident that, in 2015, Pepsi removed aspartame, which is a harmful ingredient, from their diet soda. This product didn’t do well on the market, discouraging other companies from taking the needed step. But to really understand the problem at hand, we have …show more content…
They use celebrity endorsements and creative marketing campaigns. For example, the singer and songwriter, Taylor swift has endorsed diet coke. This helps target the younger generation of girls that are already worried about their weight and physical image. This is reflected on the fact that compared to males, a higher percentage of 12- to 19-year-old females consume diet drinks.
• But it is not only teenage girls consuming diet drinks. According to the Center for Disease Control, 20% of people aged 2 and older consume diet drinks on a given day and 11% of people drink 16 ounces or more a day of diet drinks. Many of these people are convinced that Diet Soda is better than regular soda. Many of these people choose it over other beverages, even water, because they believe It will help them loose or maintain their weight. Diet sodas, just like any low or no calorie drink, contain either aspartame or saccharin, which are artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners do not contain calories, making them the perfect ingredient for diet drinks. That all sounds good in theory, but the problem is that those artificial sweeteners inside the diet soda have been shown to cause weight gain. An experiment published in the scientific journal Appetite in 20__ found that rats who consumed aspartame and saccharin, artificial sweeteners, gained more weight that those rats who were given regular sugar.
• But rats aren’t the only ones affected by artificial sweeter; we are just as susceptible to weight gain when consuming artificial sweeteners. A 2010 scientific review, conducted by the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, found positive correlations between artificial sweetener use and weight gain. In this review, researchers compiled several published studies on the subject and concluded that there was in fact a correlation and possible causation between artificial sweeteners and weight
