The diet heart hypothesis suggests that diets high in cholesterol and low in polyunsaturated fatty acids raise serum total and increase the risk of heart disease. Numerous scientific studies have made a connection between the risk of too much fat and specific diseases, such as heart disease. Some fat is necessary in a healthy diet. Fat gives the body energy and helps the body absorb vitamins. Dietary fat plays a major role in the bodies cholesterol levels. Not all fats are the same and one should avoid using saturated and trans fats such as lard and butter or snack foods. A healthy diet is the fundamental key necessary to achieve a long healthy life with the slightest risk from a cardiovascular disease. Instead of reducing total fat optimize different types of dietary fat. Instead of choosing foods that are “non-fat” or “low-fat,” replace them with healthy choices like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits that are high in unsaturated fats. By following these recommendations will allow great potential to improve overall dietary quality and reduce risk of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. In order to live a long healthy life, be mindful of nutrient replacements and the effects it can have.
