Die Wise Analysis

The second half of Die Wise elaborated the lessons Jenkinson portrays within his trade. I enjoyed learning about his views on the current state of the palliative care system and he seems to be one of the few people within this line of work that is willing to be frank with the patients he works with. The story I liked the most was the one about Louise and the relationship he had with her. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to work with someone who is unwilling to accept things as they are or are suffering from the severe anxiety of dying. With Louise, it seemed as though she had accepted the odds and was ready to move on while retaining a good sense of humor. It reminded me of my grandfather’s death and the life he lived. I was 14 years old when my grandfather died, he was 93 and had some form of cancer that the doctors didn’t notice until the last 3 years of his life. …show more content…
During the service I felt a heavy emotion of grief that hit me like a semi-truck. I cried throughout the whole service until we all went to the wake at his house. At the wake there was a table of food and many relatives I hadn’t seen in quite a while. Though I remember being sad during the service, I also remembered that the wake was the complete opposite. Everyone was sharing their stories about my grandfather and even some of his friends from WWII were there giving us an insight into that part of his life. The relationship I have with my grandfather is something that continues to shape me today. I am fortunate enough to have his life story told by him on my iPod. Even though my father accidently erased half of it which my grandfather makes fun of in the recordings, it still provides me with some comfort to hear his sarcastic rasp whenever I am in need of a laugh. After all, he was the first person to make me

We were very close, and finding out the devastating news was truly the worst news I had ever received. We decided one day to drive through downtown. In my opinion, every city you go, you must scout out the downtown area. Its pretty much the heart of a city and you never know what you'll find. Not every city takes care of their downtown area but they definitely should. In this case we found a Memorial Site and it was heart warming.…

When I first listened to the song “Remember” by Mac Miller, it brought back so many unforgettable memories I had with my best friend Taegon who passed away. The main reason I picked this song was because it really taught me not to take things for granted and just to appreciate every moment you have with the ones you care most about. I first heard the song “Remember” about a week after Taegon passed away, while a couple friends and I were just hanging out in my car. My friend asked to see the aux cord and put the song on. All of my friends and I just went quiet and just sat there, and listened to the song.…

Visiting the Holocaust Center was such a great privilege to have, even though a lot of the things that were on display may have been difficult to look at. Remembering those that died during the Holocaust helped me to stay strong because I know that there were people that couldn’t do that. Learning about that terrible time in history is hard for so many people, but we do it in remembrance and commemoration for those that we lost. There were many things on display that were just simple enough to leave a deeper, more difficult impression. One of those displays being a large portrait of Adolf Hitler that sat, staring, in a dark hall.…

The articles certainly changed my view about the death and dying process. For example in the first article “The Hospice Concept” It brought it home for me regarding the true essence of hospice. This one statement gave me clarity “Hospice is primarily a concept of care, not a specific place of care. My first nursing home job was in 1970 and there were patients who ended up under hospice care.…

This poem made me feel really sad actually. I view death as a very sad thing, but at the same time it's sweet. Most of the time death is gentle, for it cradles the dying person to sleep. I don't know if that makes sense, but I've always thought that, and that's how I have coped with the passing of family members in the past few years. Stephen Dunn says that a sweetness "makes sense of what it means to be alive", and I agree.…

I honestly did not know much about military culture other than from what was shown to me in movies and television shows. I also know that mental health issues are a huge factor for those men and women in the military. I am sure in my future career as a counselor I will come in contact with some suffering from mental illness because of their time in the military. That is why I really wanted to get a better understanding of the basics of military culture for the observation section of my action plan. I found the YouTube video Understanding the Military Culture and thought that it might give me a good overview of the military.…

The purpose of having social services is to protect others when in need of extra help. The true definition of a social service is government services provided for the benefit of the community, such as education, medical care, and housing. However, social services are mostly aimed for the welfare of helpless children who need a new home for a certain amount of time until the parent is able to take custody again. Sadly, social services are not doing their jobs correctly; plenty of children are abused or even killed under the supervision of social service. What is the point of having social services if the children who got out of a horrible home to entire another abusive home?…

Bruce Nauman’s One Hundred Live and Die, 1984, is an intricate piece combining the world of high art and the low art of advertisement using word play. It is a work containing one hundred words, fifty with “live” following them and fifty with “die,” in neon lights that light up individually, in rows, and then all together, creating visual patterns. The word combinations include actions, emotions, and colors. One Hundred Live and Die uses the game of language to leave the meaning of the work open for interpretation from the viewers and allows room for conversation. One Hundred Live and Die is a large wall installation that is 118 x 132 1/4 x 21 inches, consisting of neon tubing mounted on four metal monoliths.…
