On Tuesday night of March 1, I went to see the opera Die Fledermaus written by Johann Strauss at the UTA mainstage theatre. This opera was presented by the Maverick Theatre Company and co-directed by Dr. Soo Hong Kim and Dr. Anne Healy. Die Fledermaus is a story of revenge against Gabriel Eisenstein (Dylan Elza), that was constructed by his friend Dr. Falke (Gregory Ray Perry Jr.) because of a little prank Eisenstein played on him in the past. Through the help of Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinda, (Catherine Sheedy and Jenna Zarafonetis) and Adele (Lillian Bailey and Cassandra Kirby), along with some others, Eisenstein faces unfaithfulness, lies, and drama. Later, we learn about Rosalinda, Adele’s mistress, and her admirer named Alfred, who has entered the house. However, Rosalinda is already married to Eisenstein, who has to go to jail that night because he attacked a man. Planning to have an affair when Eisenstein goes to jail, Rosalinda hides Alfred. Eisenstein after coming home angry because his sentence was extended, but he left with Dr. Falkner, his old friend, to go to the ball to meet dancing women, instead of spending his night in jail. This is where we find out about the prank Eisenstein played on Falkner. After whining to her mistress, Adele was able to get the night off, so she steals Rosalinda’s dress and heads off to the ball as well. When they were finally left alone, Alfred comes out of his hiding place, but Rosalinda got a letter earlier saying if she wants to catch her husband being unfaithful, she should go to the ball. When the police ward finally came to arrest Eisenstein, he arrested Alfred, who was drunk and pretending to be Eisenstein, instead. And so, Rosalinda goes to the ball with a wig. Act 2 starts off with the ball scene. The main characters all go while pretending to be someone else. Eisenstein and Adele finds each other, but keeps up their act.
