In Corinth, Oedipus found out that he had a prophecy to kill the father that begot him and have children with his mother unknowingly from an oracle. He solved the sphinx's riddle which caused the city to make him king since their king was found murdered. When Oedipus was king his ego and self power grew so he thought he had the power to be compared to the Gods by himself. Oedipus with his God like self empowerment wanted to find the old king's murder. If Oedipus did not let the power of being king get in the way of him doing good deed just for the just of doing good deeds instead obsession of knowledge and power then, he would be able try and find the murder for the citizens safety and not his yearning for knowledge. Also when Jocasta warns him, “ [she] [begs] [oedipus]- do not hunt this out- [she] begs] [oedipus],/ If [oedipus] have any care for [oedipus] own life./ What [she] [is] suffering is enough.” (1060-1063) Oedipus takes this heed as if Jocasta is embarrassed when really she is trying to help him not find out the ugly truth he doesn't want to see or hear, since this will make him fail his original task to stay off the path of the prophet Oedipus is said to complete as his fate. Oedipus doesn’t listen to Jocasta and the fascination of the want and search for knowledge that he goes further onto the path and into his fate he was trying to avoid.
