Did Hamlet Really Drive Hamlet's Madness?

What is madness? Madness is when someone is in a state of mind that prevents them from normal perception, behavior, or social interaction. Madness is subjective, therefore it’s based on personal feelings or you opinion. Many evil things in the play “Hamlet” drive Hamlet to his madness such as his mother, his father being murdered by his uncle, and the betrayal of his friends.
The first thing that drives hamlet mad is the remarriage of his mother. Hamlet in his first soliloquy said “A little month, or ere those shoes were old with which she followed my poor father’s body… married with my uncle” (1.2. 151-152/155). This drove Hamlet to his madness because he was angry at how fast his mother got remarried after King Hamlet’s death. That was not the only reason Hamlet was mad. It was also because the man Gertrude (Hamlet’s mother) married was the brother of her dead husband. She mourned about King Hamlet’s death for less than a month, and that drove hamlet crazy. Also, Hamlet was mad at how weak his mother was. We see this when hamlet says “Frailty, thy name is woman” (1.2. 146). Hamlet was driven to his madness because of his mother in many different ways. The main reason the betrayal drives Hamlet to madness is because Hamlet, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern have been friends since they were kids, and they stabbed him in the back. “When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you, and, sponge, you shall be dry again” (4.2. 19-21). Hamlet says this to Rosencrantz because he soaks up all the information the king wants to know, and then it’s wrung out. That is all Claudius uses him for. Hamlet knows his friends are trying to manipulate him into telling them where the body is, but Hamlet is not stupid and knew exactly what they were trying to do. This frustrated Hamlet very much. This was another reason that drove Hamlet to his madness and made him the “crazy” person he

And-would it were not so!-you are my mother.” (3, 4, 16-17) Hamlet is claiming that he is displeased that Gertrude is his mother because she went against her previous husband, Hamlet’s real father. This is also evidence of Claudius’ evil identity because the opportunity to gain and sustain power clouds his mind to the extent where he is comfortable with surrendering the important mother-son relationship. According to Kate Stone Lombardi, “Teenage boys who are close to their moms engage in less risky behavior.” This conflict acts as a catalyst for chaos because Hamlet becomes furious over Gertrude’s quick remarriage, and…

After careful consideration and much thought I have come to the idea that Hamlet was not crazy, but more fueled by revenge than anything. At first glance it’s easy to assume that hamlet acts the way he does because he is mentally unstable and his grief has taken a toll, but ultimately it was his determination to get even with Claudius for killing his father. Nevertheless, Hamlets procrastination leads to his unfortunate demise. In the end both Claudius and Hamlet received the ultimate consequence for their sins. When Hamlet learns that that his mother has married his uncle he decides that he needs to share his feelings for her.…

However, there is more powerful evidence pointing to the fact that Hamlet is truly mad. As Shakespeare develops his characters, Hamlet seems to become crazier as the play progresses. A few examples of how Hamlet goes mad are shown when Hamlet ignores Horatio’s warning not to speak to the ghost, when Hamlet shows no remorse for taking a human life, and in the appearance of a ghost that only Hamlet can see.…

Since Hamlet was known to be an intelligent man, if it was just Gertrude that Hamlet hated, he would have said frailty, thy name is Gertrude. After Hamlet spoke to the Ghost and found out that Gertrude might have been involved with Claudius before King Hamlet died, Hamlet’s animosity for his mother grew. In Shakespeare A to Z, Charles Boyce states, “Hamlet’s detestation of his mother’s part in these evils is transformed into a revulsion against women in general and against the love-and sex- that they offer, which lead only to the creation of more humanity and thus more wickedness.” Hamlet might have suspected that his mother had something to do with his father’s death since she married the man that killed him. His motives also could have been filled with hatred because he could have been convinced that Gertrude and Claudius were intimate before his father was…

First, Hamlet’s battle with himself forces him to feign madness. Hamlet has recently been informed of the true cause of his father’s death, which makes him want to kill Claudius. His madness, that he uses to cover up his inner feelings about this matter and to disguise his suspicions, drives Hamlet to actually become insane and cause problems within his family. Hamlet’s madness causes his family and friends to betray him, which is unjust, and it shows how Hamlet’s internal conflict triggers immoral acts that lead to madness within the family and the state. Second, Hamlet’s depression, that arises partly from his conflict with himself about whether he should kill himself or not, causes him and his family to be troubled.…
