When both Psilocybin and LSD were deemed illegal in certain countries, MDMA began to emerge. In 1970, biochemist Alexander Shulgin explored controlling the altered consciousness MDMA had on people. Following Shulgin, around 4,000 psychiatrists and psychologists began experimenting with MDMA in their practice. Case reports from individual psychiatrists and psychologist proved that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy was successful in treating their patients. Although case reports analyzing the effects of MDMA were published, there are no controlled studies done to measure the effectiveness on people with mental disorders.
