The metaphor of Iago’s lies to a poison that slowly works on Othello, enhances the deadly influence Iago has over Othello. Poison often leads to death or serious illness when it infiltrates individuals. This may foreshadow Othello’s moral death or serious injury from Iago’s psychological poison. Poison can symbolize deception, corruption or betrayal, therefore the use of the word poison to describe Iago’s plans is aptly placed; there is deception in the lies that Iago uses, betrayal of the Othello’s tragic flaw of trust, and corruption of Othello’s thoughts and opinions. By poisoning Othello’s very thoughts Iago has gained the ultimate power over him.…

Moreover, there is not a single line that exists in the play which reveals Iago exposing his reality to another person. Although everyone figures out about Iago’s two-sidedness towards the end of the play, he still does not have the strength to reveal his true character or interpret why he has done such evil deeds. When Othello demands Iago for a reasoning behind his actions, Iago replies saying, “Demand me nothing; what you know, you know. / From this time forth I never will speak word” (Act V.ii.300-301). 2. a. Quote: “a man...of honesty and trust” (I.iii.223) b. Analysis: Shakespeare litters instances of dramatic irony throughout his play, especially whenever someone labels Iago as “honest.” From an outsider’s perspective, it is almost unrealistic how every character is able to fall prey so easily to Iago’s ploys and tricks. Perhaps it is Othello’s honesty and trusting heart that ironically blinds him from the deceitful manners of Iago. Othello is portrayed as one who follows the regulations and expectations established by the society, thus it would make sense that he chooses to believe in the good of everybody.…

Othello and the other characters are clueless of Iago’s true intentions; however, the reader is instantly able to realize Iago’s malicious intentions. Through the situational irony presented with Iago, the audience is able to look past Othello’s evil actions and sympathize with him because the audience knows that Iago is the cause of all evil. In addition to this case of situational irony, Iago’s characterization and relationship with Othello also allows the audience to sympathize with Othello. If the audience had not known of Iago’s ill intentions, the audience would see Othello as much more evil for his murder.…
