Right from the beginning Jack and Ralph did not always agree. Ralph wants to be rescued using a signal fire. However Jack wants to spend time hunting for pigs. The group thought they had it all organized when they called the assembly, but Jack and some others decided to hunt for pigs instead of keeping watch of the fire. Piggy and Ralph were swimming when they sighted a ship in the distance. However the signal fire was out, Jack was gone. Piggy’s glasses represent reason, and Jack attacked them one night. Jack attacked Piggy for his glasses not the conch. However Piggy thought Jack wanted the conch, “’I thought they wanted the conch’”. (168) Now that Jack controls the island he doesn’t care about the conch. Jack has all the power now; he doesn’t need the conch for control. Democracy is doomed because no one on the island wants to listen to one person, who makes all the rules. The boys were enjoying their freedom but now the democracy is like the adult world to them. Ralph and Jack splitting showed how democracy feel apart because no one agreed on a set of
