The Exemplary and Exciting Life of Dick Van Dyke Dick Van Dyke, a man once among some of the most famous American movie and television stars, took time to recount the major events in his life in the memoir, My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business. Dick Van Dyke is certainly a popular name considering all of the roles he has done as an actor and comedian throughout his life. The iconic actor recapped how he maintained his humble and family oriented views throughout his life. Because of his media platform, he was able to show his opinion to a wide audience. Van Dyke continued to use his status positively and humorously by providing a refreshing view in the memoir of his life. He accomplished this goal by focusing on how the pitfalls that came his way played a key part in making the happier moments more joyful in comparison. Though, like most stars, his road to success had a rough start. From the perspective of the present, it could seem as if celebrities easily attained their status by simply achieving it. Yet, along with several others, Van Dyke had to go through many struggles. Along with growing up in the Great Depression, he faced different challenges throughout his life such as various moves, alcoholism, divorce, and unemployment (or at least something quite near it). Some struggles he covers were not his own. To his younger brother, Jerry Van Dyke, living in the shadow of Dick Van Dyke was a challenge on its own. Throughout it all he always asked himself, “Am I going in the right direction” and continued his cheerful and kind disposition. He never sought popularity, at least not for his own sake.
