It was a dark and bleak December, still or again, no one could tell. The only light in a small chamber was the slowly dying fire in the fireplace. People with terrible countenances stared from fading paintings on the walls covered in thick layer of dust. There was a strange feeling of emptiness in the room – no smells or sounds, everything seemed lifeless. Even deep winter seemed numb.…

I walked up to the entrance of the evacuated home. The house could have been an enchanting two-story house; with its ivory framed windows, and front lawn. If it was not abandoned and lifeless, maybe this house would have been the dream house everyone fancied. But it's lifeless and boorish, just like the carrion of Timothy Woodsen. Shortly after, nearby observers discuss the hanging of Dick. One observer believes that Dick “[didn’t] feel nothing,” but his companion questions this; he “could hear him gasping for breath” (392). By including the observation of Dick “gasping for breath” before he finally died, Capote suggests that Dick suffers before his death. In addition, Capote challenges the idea that executions are quick and painless by implying that Dick could have suffered for the aforementioned amount of time – twenty minutes – before dying. Executions are not a clean, merciful death, but instead, they are ruthless and inhumane.…

The author interrupts this dream-like scene as Perry broaches the subject of the murders yet again. Immediately, Capote begins to reveal the true superficiality of Dick’s personality through uses of syntax and diction. Perry starts by explaining that there “must be something wrong” for the two of them to “do what they did”, and Dick responds with, “Did what?”(29). Though the reply may seem simple and insignificant, that is exactly the reason it is important. Capote utilizes short and abrupt sentences in order to further portray Dick as a two dimensional character.…

Undercover cops were used to diving in dumpsters, he wiped the spoiled food off the butcher’s knife and bagged it, just another day on the job for the stocky built Irishman, a fireplug, with a relentless pursuit of bad guys. His back-up pulled in the alleyway, with the disposition of a talk show host, before his morning coffee. He barked at Joey about some stupid shit, handed him a cup of brew, and sped down 4th Street, they were on their way to the rear entrance of the police station.
