The Kd for o-Toluic acid dissolved in dichloromethane and deionized water was 19.8. This result indicates that ortho-toluic acid dissolved more into the organic phase (dichloromethane) than in the aqueous phase (water). The methyl-phenyl group is water hating (hydrophobic) and because of this would tend to dissolve in another hydrophobic solvent. This follows the results found since more dissolved in the dichloromethane. This follows the adage “like dissolves like.” The dipole interaction between the two (dichloromethane and o-toluic acid would help to cause the dissolution. There was however a small amount of the acid that was found to dissolve in the aqueous phase. This was a very small amount of about 0.007 g. This is likely caused by the
