Diatom Test Paper

The diatom test is a post-mortem investigation very useful to determine if a person drown in the place they were found or if the body was disposed post-morten there. The principle behind the diatom test is the detection of a micro algae species that are normally present in water bodies.
With diatom analysis, if a person dies by drowning in a water body where diatoms are present, the water ends can be found inside the deceased lungs. As a result of a person drowning (normally the person struggles for about two and three minutes before they die) these micro algae passes onto the circulatory system, and is transported by blood to other organs such as the liver, the kidneys, and the bone narrow. If the person is already dead when they are thrown

It is paramount that sterile material and a meticulous clean technique is followed.
Once samples have been collected, slices are produced and analysed under the microscope. There are several species of diatoms of different sizes, and they have to be identified and catalogued. The aim is to compare samples from the tissues with the water samples and see if the species found are the same. If the species identified on both samples match, this would mean that the deceased drowned in that water body. A negative result would indicate the deceased passed away in a different area, and then the body was likely disposed in that body water.
Quantification of the number of microalgae its important. Number and frequency of the diatoms found is relevant. The number of diatoms in the body water and lung samples are going to be similar, however there would be a substantial drop off on the numbers when it comes to samples from organs such as liver, kidneys, and bone narrow, main reason being that only very small species of diatoms can trespass the alveoli wall to enter the blood

In this section, we verify the effectiveness of SRLP-FS through a toy example. From table II, we can know AT&T database has 400 samples, 10304 features and 40 classes. Each class has 10 samples, which represents a person's 10 face images. We randomly select two classes from AT&T database and choose two samples from these two classes as the test samples. We apply SRLP-FS to the two test samples and select {1280, 2560, 3840, 5120, 6400, 7680, 8960, 10240} features respectively to observe the feature selected results.…

In this unit of my 9th grade Physical Science, we are learning and experiencing with labs. In this week's experiment, my class did the paper towel lab. Here, we tested the quality of three different paper towel brands, Viva, Up&Up, and Bounty. Each lab group was testing for a certain quality of each brand, such as strength and absorbency. Through different experiments, each lab group came to the conclusion that one paper towel brand had more strength or better absorbency than the other two.…

Daphnia pulex are tiny aquatic crustaceans which have a translucent body which allows us to observe their internal organs in thorough detail. Daphnia is alleged to be a substitute of a human being in this experiment to examine the effects of chemicals on a heart of beings or other species for that matter . This will be measured by the heart rate as the heart rate is the contraction in one complete cardiac cycle. Furthermore Daphnia pulex is the most common species of water flea, an organism which can be found in almost every permanent, eutrophic water body. Generally Daphnia are freshwater organisms.…

The role of the phenomenon of postmortem redistribution in forensic cases Abstract It has been established in several studies that a postmortem blood sample examination is not always a reliable reflect of blood sample examination during life. There are a large number of variables affecting the blood concentration of foreign substances in a living individual, in the other hand, there are also a number of factors that can change their levels after death. Although the underlying mechanisms involved in post mortem redistribution of drugs are not very clearly defined, some main factors can contribute to this phenomenon, including physicochemical properties of the drug, the time interval between death and sampling, the action of microorganisms, the postmortem gastric diffusion and the position of the body at the time of death. The aim of this paper is to understand the phenomenon and discuss the role of site and time-dependent variations in post mortem redistribution in forensic cases.…

Introduction Eutrophication is a condition in an aquatic ecosystem where high nutrient concentrations stimulate blooms of algae (e.g., phytoplankton). Eutrophication is a natural process that occurs to all lakes over time as the weathering of rocks and soils from the surrounding area that leads to an accumulation of nutrients in the water. It can also be caused by run-offs of fertilisers. Three of the key components of modern fertilisers are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. After a rainy season these nutrients that were not absorbed, run off into waterways such as dams, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and even sometimes swimming pools.…
