We got funded by the king to go to the Indies. We got about halfway there and we turned around and landed in Brazil in April 22 1500. Once we got there we put up trading posts in calicut. The Indians burned down our trading posts and Pedro came back and bombarded the 10 ships and killed 600 Indian sailors.

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

When da Gama returned to Portugal in September 1498, the Portuguese king decided to send out one more expedition immediately to India to take advantage of the new trading opportunities that had been opened up when da Gama returned. After all, da Gama would have been the logical choice to lead such an expedition but apparently, he still needed to recover from his last voyage and perhaps, his suggestion was Cabral to take his place to lead. Cabral left the city Lisbon on March 9, 1500 with a fleet of 13 ships, much larger than da Gama fleet. As a result, the 13 ships accidently reached Brazil by mistake, rather than India for…

Whether it be at family barbecues or even out on a vacation, these family members are customary to making themselves stand out. By the end of the IO, I noticed how Marquez creates irony when describing machismo in the book. This was done through the events that were talked about and the definition of machismo. For example, Pablo thinks that Pedro is very manly because of his battle scar and his gonorrhea, which he received in the army. However, Pedro cannot urinate correctly. Pedro is in so much pain when he urinates that he has to brace himself by hugging a tree and his urination is described as urinating shards of glass.…
