Recently, the grade 10 class of BCS had the privilege of seeing the Diary of Anne Frank in play form at the Avon Theatre in Stratford, Ontario. The director Jillian Keiley had started the play by lining out the 19 actors and having them all tell stories from when they were 13. Anne Frank was also thirteen was she went into hiding in the Secret Annex. This gave a sense of understanding the difference between life back in the 1940’s and the life today.
The real life story of Anne’s diary starts out by Hitler gaining power in Germany and the Frank’s escaping Germany just like the rest of the German Jew population. The Frank’s had escaped to Holland where Otto Frank (Anne’s father) had set up a business alongside Jan Gies. On May 10th, 1942 German troops had invaded Holland and five days later the Netherland army had surrendered. Anti-Jew laws had been put in place and the Jews had less and less rights. On July 5th Margot Frank receives a call-up for a German work camp, but instead the Frank’s decided to go into hiding at Mr. Franks jam factory. It was very efficient and took no longer than two seconds to set up another scene whether it was in Anne’s bedroom or in the Frank’s part of the home. The lighting of the play to represent Hitler’s speeches and the BBC announcements were astonishing. The used their shadows to depict themselves as they would if they were making a speech. They also showed what was happening in Mr. and Mrs. Frank’s bedroom by doing the same thing showing the shadows of what they were doing. The mood for the show was very mixed, but in the end everybody in that theatre left with a feeling on sadness in their heart for the inhumane things that had happened to all of the
