Setting is important to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it helps to set the mood of the play. The mood set happens to be gloomy and sorrowful. In the beginning, setting helps establish the mood when Mr. Frank goes back to the annex to remember what had happened to his family. As written, “The rooms are dusty, the curtains in rags. Chairs and tables are overturned,” (Hackett, Goodrich, 701). This is important to the setting because it describes how things had changed in the annex from the last time he was there, and also possibly triggering memories.
