Anne and her mom had many conflicts throughout The Diary of Anne Frank. Anne and her mother never had a real mother-daughter relationship. Anne called her mother “Mum”, not the entire word “Mumsie”, because she felt that she didn’t deserve the full title. In addition, Anne refused to say her nightly prayers with her mother. One night, Pim was absent, so Mom tried to fulfill that role. However, Anne refused the offer due to the lack of respect for her mother. Mrs. van Daan was always scolding Anne about her lack manners. One occasion between the two was when Anne had read a book that she was instructed not to and Mrs. van Daan later found out and told her mother. She didn’t get much more than a scolding for her forbidden activities. However, the relationship between the two had been the two had been further strained. Anne later expressed an exasperated feeling because Mrs. van Daan is always scolding her for her manners. Although Mrs. van Daan was always berating her, she was not the only non-family member doing
