These were Anne’s diary stories, and sketches. They were all that remained” (281). My inference is that Anne considered taking her diary with her after the Secret Annex was discovered. She either decided that the diary was more likely to be found if she left it in the Secret Annex, or was forbidden by the Gestapo to take it.
