The Diary of A Young Girl contains journal entries written by a thirteen year old named Anne Frank. Anne Frank is a Jewish girl that is given a diary on her thirteenth birthday. Her first entry dates back to June 12th, 1942. (1) She writes about boys, friends, grades, and daily thoughts. (5-18) Her sister, Margot Frank, receives a call up for a German Work camp. A day after, Anne and her family go into hiding. Together, she hides with seven other people in the “Secret Annex.” (21-30) During the two years of hiding, Anne writes in her diary as a source of comfort and support. Not long before the war ends, the eight are found and relocated to concentration camps. Soon after being sent to concentration camps, Anne and Margot both die of typhus; an infectious disease caused by rickettsiae. Anne identifies herself as “two Annes.” One Anne is the girl that everyone finds amusing or irritating, and the other is one that only Anne knows of. (335-336) In her earlier diary entries, Anne explained that though she has many friends and acquaintances, she feels she does not have one person to really open up to. (1) Anne explains her frustration that she does not know how to share her feelings with others. She fears that once she opens up, she will be vulnerable to attacks. (335) Fear is displayed all throughout the book. The Franks and van Daans live in fear of being found by the German soldiers. The individuals were especially scared when the Annex was thought to be discovered.
