Junior, who is the main character in the Novel the Absolute diary of a Part-time Indian, is a young boy who is searching for his soul purpose in life. Growing up in poverty on a reservation, Junior knows that he must do whatever it takes to make his dreams come true. Through the experiences in his life, Arnold has learned what it is like to grow up in poverty and what difficult choices are made for these people in everyday life. The struggles that Junior faces within the Novel shows a great deal of what we all have experienced through the pains of growing up.

There he joins the basketball team in which they play against his old school and most importantly Rowdy. The game is so important to both sides as there are police present and the kids throw snowballs, with rocks inside of them, at Juniors bus. By telling the reader about the events leading up to the game, Sherman Alexie is allowing them to be present in the time of the game. The basketball game has a deeper meaning too Junior as they are facing his old school and everyone from the school knows Junior is playing for them. In a sense it is as though Junior is playing against his old life or his old self as all of the people from the reserve are against him, even his old friend Rowdy. The game wasn’t just a game to Junior, it ended up being a great testament which turned into the power of positivity for him. “I suppose it had something to do with confidence. I mean, I'd always been the lowest Indian on the reservation totem pole – I wasn't expected to be good so I wasn't. But in Reardan, my coach and the other players wanted me to be good. They needed me to be good. They expected me to be good. And so I became good.” (Junior chapter
