Kentucky born and raised, Diane Sawyer was a powerhouse since birth. She admired her mother, Jean, and her sisters as “everywhere you would look there would be these women- taking chances, not for a minute thinking there was nothing they couldn’t do” (Weller, p. 27). This very ideal would inspire Sawyer throughout her life. Her mother was transfixed on perfection and made sure her daughters’ distinction was well-known by enrolling them in performance classes from an early age. This could’ve been primarily due to her mother wanting the best for her children, something my own mother, Amy, tries to do for my siblings and I. In fact, Jean Sawyer “pushed her daughters to do their very best. Every opportunity she didn’t have, she made sure her daughters did have,” but sometimes her criticism could be crippling (Weller, p.7). Her father, Tom Sawyer, was a judge in the town in which she grew up. He helped Diane to find her passion and future career choice by asking three questions: “One: what are you passionate about? Two: What can you adventure doing? And Three: What can you do to make a difference?” (Weller, p.6). These very questions were asked of me when I was younger by my own parents. Without them, I would never have realized by love of storytelling and performing.

Many times the two had to cover the same stories, which was the case when 9/11 took place. This was the first time both of these women had to go on air and improvise as they watched the twin towers falling in what would later be identified as a terrorist attack.
