The work of art I chose to discuss this week is, Equestrian Portrait of King Phillip II (Michael Jackson), an oil on canvas painting done in 2010 by Kehinde Wiley. I chose this painting because Kehinde Wiley’s art interests me. When I first looked up some of his work I found that he has a signature style of remake classic paintings from the 17th century all the way up to the 19th century. But he adds his own twist to them. There were seven artists involved in the creation of FABRICation: Erin E. Castellan, Kristy Deetz, Virginia Derryberry, Reni Gower, Rachel Hayes, Susan Iverson, and Natalie Smith. In Miriam Schapiro’s “The Education of Women as Artists: Project Womanhouse” she first introduces the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts and how she and Judy Chicago would be working side by side during the second quarter in order to turn their experiences as artists into ways of teaching. Schapiro argues that Chicago and she went from artists to teachers as they pushed social expectations of women through the art displayed in Womanhouse as well as with the building of the actual house. The women did jobs such as flooring and wood work that were often jobs of men. Mary Pratt, a Canadian artist who resides in St. John’s Newfoundland, specializes in realist paintings that concentrate on domestic life and its surroundings. Mary Pratt married Christopher Pratt, who is also a well-known Canadian artist. Christopher had an impact on Pratt’s work, as he strongly recommended the use of photography to his wife. Brenda Ways and KT Nelson choreographed/curated Boulder and Bones with Lucy Lippard Escape Attempts by allowing themselves to create a conceptual performative art that was “free to let the[ir] imagination run rampant.” (p.7 ). In her 2006 article “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean argues that the using the word “art” for both past visual expressions (particularly nonwestern) does not quite capture the true definition of what these pieces are. This argument is valid, to consider these works as mere entertainment erases a culture’s true history and identity. Dean has a very strong argument for the analysis and retirement of the term “art”, however the ideas surrounding the concept of “art” explain the larger issue as a whole. When you are evaluating artwork subjectively, you want to look at the creativity that the art piece expression and what feelings that the artwork brings out of you. Take in account how much space that the drawing takes up, what tools were used to create the artwork, and the amount of difficultly involved in creating the art piece. Subjectively evaluating artwork is mostly about personal opinion and relates to your feelings. When you are evaluating art objectively, you want keep personal opinions and feelings out of it at first. You want to look at more with historical significance and positions.…
It is well known that Western culture and the Western world has endeavored to assert itself over other cultures for many centuries. Beginning with the colonization of groups of people deemed lesser by the standards of white Europeans, who often forced their customs or religion on people they had colonized, Western civilizations continue to push their cultural standards on other parts of the world, especially when it pertains to art. In the essay, “The Trouble with the Term Art”, Carolyn Dean raises questions about the overwhelming western standard of art, and how different cultures have different views of aesthetic beauty. Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
