Dialogue Essays: Differences Between Graff And Ender

Ender starts to get get disoriented before the flight. He and nineteen other boys are on the flight to the battle school. All the boys were joking around, messing around, and laughing. Ender however was just sitting there in silence. When boarding the shuttle the officer made a joke and Ender did not know how to react so he kept his silence. To Ender’s surprise Graff was on the shuttle as well. Graff came up a way that was funny to Ender and Ender played a gravity game in his head. Without knowing it he laughed outloud at himself. Graff then confronted Ender with a very cold look. Graff then says to the rest of the boys on the shuttle that Ender is the only one on the shuttle who has brains. After Graff left some of the boys antagonized Ender. He started to correctly predict when they were going to his his head. On the last hit he caught the boy's arm and yanked it as hard as he could. Then Graff comes in to examine his arm. Ender broke the boy’s left arm. Graff then points out again that Ender is the only one he counts on that will make it in Battle School. When the shuttle landed Graff asked Ender if he had a good flight. At this point Ender had felt betrayed by Graff and responded how he thought Graff was his friend. I am his friend...He’s clean. Right to the heart, he’s good’”(Card 34). This quote is important because after the flight Ender thought that Graff was no longer his friend. Graff had to explain to Ender some things that he needed to know. This is hard for Graff because as we see later Graff says that they are friends he just can’t admit it to Ender. Graff is also a little bit concerned about what is going to happen to Ender and his personality. He doesn’t want Ender to be drastically changed from Battle School. Graff knows that Ender is a good kid and he wants him to stay that
