Marylin had been dying to have a sleepover with Ruby for sometime now. When the subject had finally come up between Ruby and Marylin, Ruby asked about Saturday night. It worked for Marylin but Ruby would still have to ask her parents. Ruby would call Marylin later that night. Marylin sat by the phone for the rest of that evening and she never got a call.
The next day at school Marylin walked up to Ruby at her locker. She played dumb about the whole situation and finally said that it wouldn’t work. Now Marylin would have to find someone else that she could spend the night with. The idea came to her in language arts. What about Rhetta? Marylin tried dismissing the thought but Rhetta was her only hope. Luckily Rhetta agrees to the idea. Was there

Marylin kindly say no as she looks at Rhetta’s smokey makeup. Yet Rhetta convinces Marylin to let her put natural looking makeup on her. Rhetta smiles and grabs a fluffy makeup brush from a cardboard box. You could clearly tell the family had just moved in. As for Rhetta’s family, they were actually very normal. Rhetta’s father, Reverend Mayes, was a pastor at a church. Marylin could tell he was very laid back, but she still wondered what he thought about Rhetta’s makeup. “I think it bugs my mom, but not my dad,” replies Rhetta after Marylin asks. It was now Marylin found that you don't know someone if you haven't been in there house. She was especially surprised when Mr. Mayes lead a pray over the pizza box at supper. Throughout the dinner Mrs. Mayes chattered through saying silly things. Afterwards the girls returned to Rhetta’s room to finish Marylin’s makeup. As Rhetta brushed powder onto Marylin’s face, Reverend Mayes stood in the doorway talking to Marylin. He invited Marylin to church the next morning. Not just Marylin, but her parents. Marylin froze after hearing the words. “Uh, my parents are divorced,” replies Marylin. All Mr Mayes said was, “Everyone is broken sweetie.
