As I woke to the sound of the barracks doors slamming open, I braced myself for another day of suffering in Buchenwald. The air is thick with the stench of sweat, fear and despair as we shuffle out of our overcrowded bunks, bodies stiff and aching from the cold and the hard wooden planks beneath us. We line up outside in the bitter cold, frosty air biting at our exposed skin. Roll Call begins, and we stand motionless for what feels like hours as the SS officers count and recount us, their eyes filled with cruelty. Any sign of weakness or disobedience is met with swift and brutal punishment. Once roll call is over, we are herded like cattle to the mess hall for our small ration of watery soup and stale bread. My job is to prepare weapons for the factories. As I begin crafting bombs and other weaponry, I feel a warm breeze on my neck that causes my hair to stand up. I turned to face an SS officer, breathing down my back. “Have you learned nothing?” My heart beats faster, trying to escape my chest. “W-what?” I say, puzzled. “Don’t make me repeat myself again,” boy! Have you learned nothing?” The next thing I know, I take a hit to the face and I’m fighting for consciousness. My vision goes black and my body limps, but I still hear the faint sound of the guard scolding me. He says something along the lines that I did a lousy job. After that I could not tell you, because the next thing I know is I wake up amidst a pile of corpses. The stench is so unbearable, and the sight is indescribable. It hits me. The guard must’ve assumed I was dead and threw me alongside one of the many piles of dead bodies that lay around this camp. As I struggle trying to crawl my way out of the lifeless pile, yet again my fate is determined because another guard spots
